Lake Summit, NC
Client’s Vision & Design Parameters: The client’s private cottage sits forty plus feet above Lake Summit and the family’s boat house. The existing steps down to the lake were a combination of cinder block and railroad ties, both of which were deteriorating making access to the lake unsafe. The steep bank below the steps was also a concern and in need of improvement. Maintaining views from the cottage to the lake was a priority for the client.
Design Response: Breaking up the slope into tiered retaining walls with planted terraces stabilizes the bank and offers opportunities for pocket gardens along the way. Using natural cut stone steps and foot lighting provides a stable and safe access route between the cottage and lake. Creating a winding stairway provides room for landings and places of pause along the way. We brought in native flowering shrubs, perennials, ferns, groundcovers to stabilized the bank, frame views to the lake, and attract pollinators.
